Umihotaru: The Floating Rest Stop in Tokyo Bay – A Must-Visit for Road Trip Lovers!
If you’re a fan of road trips, breathtaking ocean views, and epic food, then Umihotaru should be on your Japan travel list! 🚗🌊
This one-of-a-kind floating rest stop sits in the middle of Tokyo Bay and is part of the famous Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, a highway that connects Tokyo and Chiba. It’s not just a rest stop—it’s an experience.
In this blog, I’ll take you through my journey to Umihotaru, exploring its driving route, facilities, food options, and travel tips to make the most of your visit.
What Is Umihotaru?
Umihotaru (海ほたる) literally translates to “sea firefly”, named after the bioluminescent sea creatures that glow at night. But this is no ordinary stopover—it’s an artificial island in the middle of the sea with restaurants, shops, observation decks, and even an arcade!
Umihotaru is part of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, a 15.1 km highway that consists of:
✅ A 9.6 km underwater tunnel from Kawasaki (Tokyo side)
✅ A 4.4 km bridge leading to Kisarazu (Chiba side)
The transition from the tunnel to the bridge happens at Umihotaru, making it the perfect spot to take a break, enjoy the ocean breeze, and grab some amazing food!
Driving to Umihotaru: The Ultimate Ocean Road Trip
One of the best things about Umihotaru is the drive itself. The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line offers a surreal experience—you start underwater in a tunnel and suddenly emerge onto a bridge surrounded by nothing but the ocean.
🚗 How to Get There:
- From Tokyo: Take the Metropolitan Expressway (Shuto Expressway) to the Aqua-Line entrance at Kawasaki.
- From Chiba: Enter from Kisarazu and drive toward Tokyo.
- Toll Fee: The Aqua-Line costs ETC: ¥800 / Cash: ¥3,140 (ETC users get a huge discount!).
📌 Pro Tip: Drive at night for stunning city lights reflecting on the ocean or visit early in the morning for a peaceful sunrise experience!
